When players enter the Forest of Valor in Disney Dreamlight Valley for the first time, they'll be introduced to Kristoff, one of the many NPCs from Frozen that appears in the Gameloft title. Once you meet him, he'll show you a dark portal that leads to a mysterious and foggy area known only as the Dark Grove.
Kristoff will tell you that Donald Duck went through the portal, and you'll need to go through it yourself to save him. Part of saving him, though, requires having Merlin create an item. The problem, though, is Merlin needs a plant from the Dark Grove to make that item—and finding that plant is a lot more difficult than it sounds.
After receiving the quest to gather the ingredients for the tracking spell, head into the Dark Grove through the portal. Inside, you'll find that you're surrounded by various trees, fog, and multiple Night Thorns. The easiest way to find the plant in the Dark Grove is to head around the portal and look out for a curling Night Thorn with a glowing purple figure at the top.

The plant that you're looking for is the glowing purple part at the top. You'll just need to interact with it to pick it up, and then it will be added to your inventory. If you're still having trouble finding the plant, you can also look for two trees with a large, curling Night Thorn between them. Then, look up at the top of the Night Thorn to spot the purple plant you need to acquire.
You'll also need to gather two Emeralds to complete the magical tracking spell. These gems can easily be gathered by mining for Iron Ore and other goodies in the Glade of Trust and the Forest of Valor.
Additionally, the spell calls for Dream Shards, which can be gathered by cleaning up Night Thorns throughout the game's different areas. The best way to do this is to head to areas you haven't cleaned up yet, as they'll have more Night Thorns to work with.
Before you continue, you should also make sure you have some 5-Star recipes cooked up to provide you with a nice well-fed bonus and extra energy. This will help you mine for long periods in case you're having trouble gathering all the Emeralds you need. One easy 5-Star recipe you can make is Ratatouille, which you'll unlock the recipe for very early on in Disney Dreamlight Valley.
